Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to contribute to exhibit design and renovation planning.

This unit applies to individuals who work in animal carer, keeper or aquarist roles, undertaking individual and team activities in small to large scale animal facilities. They perform work under broad direction and are required to take responsibility for their own work, including carrying out assigned tasks, organising processes and working to schedules.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures according to Commonwealth and state/territory health and safety and animal welfare regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Assess exhibit status

1.1 Identify current species-specific standards for exhibits and facility goals or plans for exhibit

1.2 Review exhibit security for animals, staff and the public according to facility safety and security procedures

1.3 Assess exhibit structure and furnishings in relation to promotion of positive animal welfare and animal's ability to express natural behaviours

1.4 Review exhibit aesthetics and access from the perspective of public perception, facility goals and animal needs

1.5 Assess condition, functionality and safety of exhibit furnishings

1.6 Document recommendations for exhibit design or renovation upgrades

2. Assist with exhibit design and renovation planning

2.1 Review enclosure and exhibit development and renovation proposals

2.2 Discuss and contribute to facility concept briefs for the design or renovation of enclosures and exhibits

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has assisted with exhibit design and renovation planning for one enclosure or exhibit, including:

  • assessed current exhibit status and submitted upgrade recommendations
  • contributed at least two recommendations to a concept brief for new or renovated exhibit or enclosure.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • principles and practices of animal exhibit or enclosure design and renovation planning, including:
  • positive animal welfare
  • naturalistic landscaping
  • horticulture, including basic working knowledge of exhibit plants and weeds
  • aesthetics, function and effects of introduced fixtures and features
  • educational and interpretive functions of enclosures
  • security and safety of exhibits, including:
  • public areas and back of house areas
  • access and control principles
  • animal biology and husbandry requirements relevant to enclosures and exhibits
  • principles of animal welfare and ethics, including:
  • ability to express natural behaviours
  • species-specific requirements of exhibits or enclosures
  • environmental enrichment related to exhibit species
  • relevant legislation and codes of practice and facility policies and procedures, including:
  • health and safety
  • animal welfare and ethics
  • hygiene standards
  • facility goals and plans relating to exhibits or enclosures
  • industry standard exhibit or enclosure requirements for relevant species.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of the skills in this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • an animal care workplace or an environment that accurately reflects a real workplace setting
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • animals and exhibits or enclosures
  • equipment and resources appropriate to work undertaken in a captive or exhibited animal facility
  • specifications:
  • facility policies and procedures
  • legislation, codes of practice and industry standards for exhibits or enclosures.
  • relationships:
  • supervisor.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
