Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to determine the housing and maintenance needs of specific species and breeds of birds.

This unit applies to individuals working in companion animal industry organisations that include aviaries and bird rooms as part of their operations. These individuals analyse information and exercise judgement to complete a range of skilled activities and demonstrate deep knowledge in a specific technical area. They have accountability for the work of others and analyse, design and communicate solutions to a range of complex problems.

No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.

NOTE: The terms 'occupational health and safety' (OHS) and 'work health and safety' (WHS) generally have the same meaning in the workplace. In jurisdictions where the national model WHS legislation has not been implemented, RTOs must contextualise the unit of competency by referring to current OHS legislative requirements.

1. Determine housing needs

1.1 Identify housing requirements of particular species and breeds, and provide appropriate security and housing

1.2 Determine husbandry practices of species, and provide appropriate resources

2. Maintain enclosures

2.1 Develop maintenance plans for aviaries and bird rooms according to WHS requirements and environmental considerations

2.2 Conduct maintenance activities according to maintenance plans and industry standards

2.3 Select and use appropriate tools, equipment and materials, including personal protective equipment (PPE)

2.4 Implement environmentally safe and effective measures, including hygiene standards and infection control procedures

2.5 Document maintenance plans and activities

3. Identify and control pests and report notifiable diseases

3.1 Identify pests and implement appropriate control procedures

3.2 Maintain pest control and disease records

3.3 Identify notifiable diseases and document and report in accordance with legislative requirements

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has managed and maintained at least two aviaries or bird rooms over a period of at least 10 days, including:

  • provided appropriate husbandry for birds
  • maintained enclosures
  • identified pests and applied pest control techniques
  • detected and reported notifiable diseases
  • maintained accurate records and workplace documentation.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • principles and practices of aviary and bird room maintenance
  • avian biology related to the care and wellbeing of commonly held avian species and breeds
  • avian pests and diseases and treatment strategies
  • bird common names
  • communication procedures and systems
  • disinfectants, cleaning agents, cleaning techniques and cleaning equipment and materials used in a companion animal workplace
  • general maintenance and cleaning requirements of avian housing
  • housing requirements of bird species and breeds
  • physical, behavioural and social requirements of a range of avian species and breeds kept in captivity
  • animal ethics and welfare
  • appropriate use of PPE
  • recordkeeping systems
  • safe avian handling techniques and procedures
  • safe work practices
  • species and breed nutritional requirements and feeding techniques
  • species compatibility
  • standards, guidelines and approaches to environmental sustainability relevant to the animal care industry
  • WHS and animal welfare legislative requirements and codes of practice
  • waste management strategies
  • zoonotic diseases associated with animal care, and methods of prevention and control.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of skills must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in a workplace setting or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • live birds
  • aviaries or bird rooms
  • equipment for the maintenance of aviaries or bird rooms
  • materials for pest control in birds
  • hygiene and cleaning products for the maintenance of aviaries or bird rooms.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
