Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and interpret animal body language and behaviour in an animal control and regulation environment.

This unit applies to individuals who are required to identify animals and respond appropriately to their behaviour, as part of an animal control and regulation role.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Recognise and identify animal

1.1 Identify animal by characteristics, breed, type and group

1.2 Document a brief description, including unique features of the animal

1.3 Seek assistance from supervisors or peers according to workplace protocols

2. Identify animal behaviour

2.1 Observe animal and interpret its body language and other behavioural signs

2.2 Identify and document temperament, traits, health and wellbeing of animal

2.3 Assess physical and social environment of animal

2.4 Determine behaviour of animal, identifying indicators of normal and abnormal behaviour

3. Assess and respond to animal behaviour

3.1 Assess biosecurity, infection control and hygiene risks and hazards to the public, self, bystanders and target animals

3.2 Discuss constructive solutions to animal behaviour with owners when appropriate

3.3 Provide owners with referral to specialists according to workplace protocols

3.4 Action statutory response to animal behaviour according to workplace protocols

3.5 Accurately enter new or amend existing records of the response in an organisational management system

3.6 Follow organisational policies and procedures and legislative requirements

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has:

  • identified at least ten animals by breed, type and group
  • assessed specific types of animal behaviours, assessed wellbeing, and responded accordingly on at least two occasions
  • determined the behaviour and temperament of animals on at least two occasions
  • actioned a statutory response or referred unusual or dangerous behaviour to a specialist
  • accessed and used an organisation management system to keep and maintain accurate records
  • documented information about the animal, its behaviour and the action taken on each occasion
  • maintained high standards of hygiene and infection control on each occasion.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • how to identify a range of animals by breed, type and group
  • animal behaviour as it relates to breed, type or group, including signs of normal and abnormal behaviour
  • how to recognise animal stress and comfort
  • the owner-animal relationship and its effect on animal behaviour
  • the principles of animal health, hygiene, diseases and zoonoses
  • various types of antisocial behaviour in animals and how to deal with these
  • what to look for in the environment, including where the animal lives, how it is managed by its owner and how that impacts on animal behaviour
  • the principles of animal welfare and ethics
  • animal welfare frameworks, including the Five Freedoms
  • approaches to assessing welfare and wellbeing
  • key requirements of relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes of practice relevant to work undertaken in an animal control and regulation environment
  • the range of statutory responses available under relevant legislation to deal with animal behaviour issues.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of skills must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in a workplace setting or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • access to real animals
  • equipment and resources appropriate to work being undertaken in an animal care environment, including personal protective equipment
  • organisational management system
  • specifications:
  • organisational policies and procedures, legislation, industry standards and codes of practice relevant to work undertaken in animal control.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
