Qualification Description
This qualification reflects the skills and knowledge required for individuals undertaking a range of animal care functions in a zoo, wildlife sanctuary, aquaria or other facility where animals are cared for or exhibited. It applies to individuals who undertake activities autonomously or in teams working under broad direction. Activities may include individual animal welfare to social group management in small to large scale facilities.
Job roles covered by this qualification may include:
- Zookeeper/Animal carer
- Native wildlife carer
- Wildlife rehabilitator
- Animal technical officer
- Aquarist.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.
Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Packaging Rules
To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:
- 16 units of competency:
- 12 core units plus
- 4 elective units.
Elective units must ensure the integrity of the qualification’s Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome. The electives are to be chosen as follows:
- at least 2 from the electives listed below in Group A - Note: only one of the following infection control units can be selected from Group A:
- ACMINF301 Comply with infection control policies and procedures in animal care work
- ACMINF303 Implement infection control in the handling and care of native wildlife
- up to 2 from Group B or any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
