Description:
The purpose of the course is to provide learners with a range of skills to work on built heritage structures. It aims to provide skilled labour to address the critical shortage of heritage trade specialist. It covers a range of traditional trades and is based on the majority of training happening at heritage sites. Both traditional and contemporary conservation techniques are trained. Heritage sites are those sites that are listed on the World, National, Commonwealth, State or Local Government heritage listings.

On completion of the Certificate III in Heritage Trade Skills, participants will have the skills to:
• identify work health and safety (WHS) hazards particular to older buildings in Australia
• work safely on a heritage site
• identify common failures in heritage building structures
• understand the roles and responsibilities of people involved in working on listed properties
• understand contemporary and innovative conservation practices, with a focus on retaining as much of the original fabric of a structure as possible.
• identify the approvals required to undertake work on a listed site
• plan and prepare to undertake practical work on a listed structure
• understand the specialist materials that are used on heritage restoration and conservation projects
• apply the principles of restoration and conservation to practical projects, adhering to the principle to ‘do as much as necessary but as little as possible’
• identify and treat salt attack and moisture issues
• accurately measure and use materials
• undertake labouring tasks across a range of traditional trades, including:
o Stonemasonry
o Bricklaying
o Plastering
o Carpentry
o Tiling
o Painting and decorating
• Develop advanced skills in heritage techniques in
o Stonemasonry
o Bricklaying
o Plastering
o Carpentry

The course is not designed to replace existing Certificate III apprenticeship trades, but to provide learners with specialised heritage skills. The course could be completed concurrently with an apprenticeship.
