This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to use specialised bulk transfer equipment for dry materials in accordance with relevant state/territory regulations.

It includes planning work, transferring material, monitoring and operating controls, and completing all operations, as required.

Work is performed under general supervision.

Plan work

Equipment is shut down in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, without injury to personnel or damage to equipment, loads or facilities in accordance with workplace procedures

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

• applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
• applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures
• communicating and working effectively with others
• estimating mass, volume and special requirements of dry bulk products
• identifying and correctly using equipment required to transfer dry bulk product
• identifying goods coding, Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code markings and emergency information panels
• implementing contingency plans
• monitoring equipment performance
• monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule and modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments
• operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with workplace operating procedures
• reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs
• reporting and/or rectifying identified problems, faults or malfunctions promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
• selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) workplace procedures
• servicing equipment in terms of maintenance schedule and standard operating procedures
• working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to product or equipment.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

• current ADG Code and relevant state/territory mass and loading regulations as they apply to vehicles transporting dry bulk product
• housekeeping standards and procedures
• methods of securing a vehicle following transfer of dry bulk product
• relevant regulatory, permit and licence requirements
• relevant WHS/OHS procedures and guidelines for using specialised bulk transfer equipment
• risks when transferring dry bulk product and related precautions to control the risk
• workplace procedures and policies for efficient use of specialised equipment to transfer dry bulk loads.

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so. Where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
