Qualification Description

This is a general qualification for a person engaged in rolling stock maintenance in the rail environment who perform tasks involving a defined range of skilled applications in a wide variety of contexts. It may involve application of some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.

Job roles 

Job roles and titles vary across different sectors. Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include:

  • Rail rolling stock maintenance – electrical 
  • assistant to a tradesperson
  • maintenance worker
  • trades assistant
  • Rail rolling stock maintenance – mechanical 
  • assistant to a tradesperson

Please note: RTO to insert on the testamur, the technical elective unit group selected from the group choice below. 

People achieving competence in this qualification will need to fulfil the applicable state/territory legislated requirements and to comply with relevant rail safety and system of safeworking.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

Packaging Rules

A total of 21 units of competency  comprising:

  • 13 core units  listed below, plus
  • 4 units  within a technical elective unit group (job roles), from Group A, Group B or Group C listed below, plus
  • 4 general elective units  from the general elective units, Group D listed below.

Up to 2 of the general elective units  may be selected from any relevant nationally endorsed Training Package. The general elective units must contribute to the vocational outcomes of the qualification.

Where imported units are selected, care must be taken to ensure that all prerequisite units specified are complied with.
