Application

This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct rigid haul truck operations in Civil construction, Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive.

This unit is appropriate for those who work in operational roles.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for rigid haul truck operations

1.1 Access, interpret and apply conducting rigid haul truck operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the work activities

1.5 Access, interpret and apply required geological and survey data

1.6 Inspect and prepare work area in coordination with others

1.7 Resolve coordination requirements with others at the site prior to commencing, during and on completions of work activities

2. Operate rigid haul truck

2.1 Isolate vehicle and carry out pre-start checks including a walk around the vehicle and inspection of the body and tyres and report any issues identified

2.2 Enter and exit the vehicle using a three points of contact technique

2.3 Conduct start-up procedures, then start up the vehicle

2.4 Select and modify the operating/drive technique to appropriately meet changing work conditions

2.5 Drive, manoeuvre, conduct and control operations within the vehicle limitations

2.6 Act on or report monitoring systems and alarms

2.7 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety to self, others, plant and equipment

2.8 Conduct park-up and shutdown procedures

3. Load, haul and dump materials

3.1 Position rigid haul truck under loading equipment and load vehicle

3.2 Carry out approved haulage operations

3.3 Carry out approved dumping operations

3.4 Complete load, haul and dump work activity

4. Carry out rigid haul truck post-operational procedures

4.1 Prepare vehicle for maintenance

4.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding

4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks

4.4 Refuel vehicle

4.5 Return vehicle to service

4.6 Process written maintenance records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • works effectively with others to undertake and complete the conduct of rigid haul trucks that meets all of the required outcomes including:
  • using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others
  • coordinates activities with others
  • working safely around other machines and personnel
  • demonstrates consistent timely conduct of rigid haul trucks that safely, effectively and efficiently meets the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
  • driving and manoeuvring rigid haul vehicle smoothly, adjusting operation techniques for the work environment and changing work conditions
  • operating rigid haul vehicle within limitations
  • correctly positioning the rigid haul vehicle for loading of materials under at least one (1) of the following types of loading equipment during the three occasions:
  • shovels
  • wheel loaders
  • excavators
  • bins
  • conveyor belts
  • draglines
  • hauling materials to designated location/s i.e. Tip Head, Crusher pocket, Waste Dump etc
  • correctly positioning the vehicle for dumping of materials
  • unloading materials from the rear of the vehicle in designated location and limiting spillage
  • undertaking approved vehicle shutdown and refuelling procedures
  • identifying issues with vehicle equipment and makes minor adjustments

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when conducting rigid haul truck operations:

  • equipment safety requirements
  • equipment operating, maintenance and cleaning requirements and procedures
  • vehicle refueling procedures
  • complying with operational system
  • start-up and shutdown procedures
  • hauling procedures
  • loading procedures
  • changing work conditions
  • systems and alarms

Assessment Conditions

  • An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing: and,
  • this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
  • this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
  • assessor requirements differ between sectors as follows:
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Metalliferous Mining  sector:
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years of current and continuous work with the Industry sector and must hold the TAE Assessor Skill Set or equivalent; or,
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Coal Mining  sector:
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through twelve (12) month work experience in an Industry relevant to the skills being assessed within the last three (3) years; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must demonstrate competency in the unit being assessed, and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of twelve (12) months’ work experience within the last three (3) years; or,
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Extractive  sector
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years’ work experience in the Industry sector; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must hold the unit being assessed and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of two (2) years’ of current work experience; or,
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Civil Construction  sector
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years’ work experience in the Industry sector; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must hold the unit being assessed and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of two (2) years’ of current work experience.
