Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for operations

1.1 Access, interpret and apply concrete paver stringlines documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.5 Identify, obtain and implement signage requirements

1.6 Select and check for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

2. Inspect equipment and layout

2.1 Conduct visual inspection of stringlines to ensure compliance with workplace specifications

2.2 Conduct inspection of stringline flags and pins and ensure compliance with worksite plans

2.3 Inspect hand or car winch and other pulling devices for safe and accurate operation

2.4 Conduct visual inspection of ground conditions for conformance to work requirements

2.5 Load and unload stringline pins onto vehicle within workplace specifications

2.6 Set up barricades and exclusion zones around work area/PTE

3. Conduct placement of stringline and pins

3.1 Drive in stringline pins and placement of pins within workplace specifications

3.2 Ensure correct tension of stringlines

3.3 Use tension measuring devices to establish accurate tensions on stringlines

3.4 Set up anchor pins within workplace specifications

3.5 Communicate with work teams using workplace hand or radio communication procedures

3.6 Tie off stringline to anchor pins

3.7 Release stringline from anchor pins

3.8 Set out from survey pins heights/level and undertake visual verification of alignment

3.9 Reset stringline to specification after it breaks

4. Install and remove access gates

4.1 Release stringline from the flags and fix on ground to allow vehicles to cross

4.2 Install and remove protective devices for crossing vehicles where required

4.3 Verify stringline vertical and horizontal upon resetting via measurement and visual inspection

5. Store and maintain pins and stringline

5.1 Check and maintain clamps, nuts and drive pins

5.2 Clean, check, maintain and store stringline to protect it from damage

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures
  • implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient setup and maintenance of concrete paver stringlines including:
  • accessing, interpreting and applying documentation relevant to setup and maintenance of concrete paver stringlines
  • identifying and applying relevant specifications to all work activities
  • identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks
  • identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing signage requirements
  • selecting and checking for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues and ground conditions
  • works effectively with others to setup and maintain concrete paver stringlines in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:
  • preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements
  • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
  • using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones
  • monitoring movements and hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process
  • demonstrates completion of the setup and maintenance of concrete paver stringlines that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
  • inspecting equipment and layout for compliance with workplace specifications
  • setting up barricades and exclusion zones
  • conducting placement of stringline and pins to set specifications
  • installing and removing access gates and carrying out inspections
  • storing and maintaining pins and stringline correctly
  • conduct concrete paver stringlines operations by:
  • installing two (2) access points
  • installing pins to correct height and horizontal adjustment for a minimum distance of five hundred (500) metres
  • installing step-up flags
  • tension string lines to specifications
  • conducting measurement checks
  • conducting visual inspections and checks
  • placing at least one (1) crossover
  • demonstrating the removal and storage of a string line

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when setting up and maintaining concrete paver stringlines through:

  • accessing, interpreting and applying organisation and site requirements and procedures for the setup and maintenance of concrete paver stringlines for:
  • identifying and managing risks
  • identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues
  • setting up work activity
  • site isolation, signage, erecting barriers and traffic control
  • work health and safety
  • selecting and checking for faults, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • carrying out work to specifications
  • applying effective techniques for the setup and maintenance of concrete paver stringlines operations

Assessment Conditions

  • An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
  • this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
  • this unit must be assessed in compliance with relevant legislation/regulation and using policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals directly related to the industry sector for which it is being assessed; and,
  • assessment may be conducted in conjunction with the assessment of other Units of Competency; and,
  • assessment must confirm consistent performance can be applied in a range of relevant workplace circumstances; and,
  • assessors must demonstrate the performance evidence, and knowledge evidence as outlined in this Unit of Competency, and through the minimum years of current* work experience specified below in an Industry sector relevant to the outcomes of the unit; or,
  • where the assessor does not meet experience requirements a co-assessment or partnership arrangement must exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry subject matter expert. The Industry subject matter expert should hold the unit being assessed (or an equivalent unit) and/or demonstrate equivalence of skills and knowledge at the unit level. An Industry technical expert must also demonstrate skills and knowledge from the minimum years of current work experience specified below in the Industry sector, including time spent in roles related to the unit being assessed; and,
  • assessor and Industry subject matter expert requirements differ depending on the Australian Qualifications Framework Level (AQF) of the qualification being assessed and/or Industry Sector as follows:

    Where this Unit is being assessed outside of the Resources and Infrastructure Sectors assessor and/or Industry subject matter expert experience should be in-line with industry standards for the sector in which it is being assessed and where no Industry standard is specified should comply with any relevant regulation.

    *Assessors can demonstrate current work experience through employment within Industry in a role relevant to the outcomes of the Unit; or, for external assessors this can be demonstrated through exposure to Industry by conducting frequent site assessments across various locations.
