Unit descriptor 

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to perform the tasks associated with finishing of headwear and involves final inspection.

Application of the Unit 

The unit applies to activities associated with undertaking finishing operations on headwear and related articles.

Work is conducted according to defined procedures.

Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities

The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:

• requirements prescribed by legislation, awards, agreements and conditions of employment
• standard operating procedures
• work instructions
• oral, written and visual communication
• quality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output
• housekeeping
• tasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control, and recycling

This unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising to perform finishing of clothing. Problem solving skills are required to ensure work conforms to requirements and identify any production problems. Communication skills are used to refer to and complete required documentation. Self management skills are used to ensure safe use of technology and conformance of own work to quality standards.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

1 Confirm finishing requirements

1.1 Requirements for finishing headwear are confirmed to ensure defined standards are met

2 Label headwear and attach elastic

2.1 Labels  are attached to headwear as required.

2.2 Elastic and other fastening is attached, as required.

2.3 Tools and equipment  are used effectively

3 Finish headwear

3.1 Headwear is finished for presentation by brushing, steaming or pressing.

3.2 Final inspection  of headwear is assessed to ensure conformance to quality and safety standards.

3.3 Non-conformance to standards is identified and appropriate action taken.

3.4 OHS practices  are followed.

3.5 Action is taken according to OHS practices to prevent accidents and to eliminate risks to personal safety.

4 Maintain records

4.1 Finished article and non-conformance records and reports are accurately maintained.
