Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to make plates for any printing process with repeated images from film inputs. It requires the individual to produce step and repeat layouts and set up step and repeat machines according to job specifications.
It applies to individuals working in the printing and graphic arts industries who work under some supervision using practical skills and equipment to produce multiple image plates.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence
Evidence of the ability to:
- prepare and set up of at least TWO step and repeat layouts for production of multiple repeated images according to listed performance criteria and job specifications
- transfer underlying skills of step and repeat across different pre-press systems and printing processes
- find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Knowledge Evidence
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
- explain relationship between image of the original and the final substrate
- describe calculation required to produce final layout
- explain necessary steps to ensure correct and safe operation of the step and repeat machine
- outline work health and safety (WHS) concerns when processing printing plates
- explain how to prepare and use a mask to suit the job
- outline procedures to ensure correct registration and accuracy/repeatability of exposure
- identify manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, where they are kept, and information included in them.
Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
