Application
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to construct complete and partial immediate replacement dentures and surgical templates.
This unit applies to work in dental technology.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

1. Arrange artificial teeth for try-in
|
1.1 Select artificial teeth in accordance with work order
1.2 Arrange artificial teeth in current edentulous area in accordance with work order

2. Arrange artificial teeth and construct surgical template for finish
|
2.1 Remove model teeth individually and prepare the ridge in accordance with work order
2.2 Arrange artificial teeth in sequence as each model tooth is removed
2.3 Adjust existing artificial teeth if necessary when commencing removal of model teeth
2.4 Contour wax surfaces
2.5 Invest/key and boil out
2.6 Finalise the ridge shape
2.7 Duplicate and pour model
2.8 Construct surgical template

3. Process immediate dentures

3.1 Trim and polish immediate dentures

3.4 Decontaminate the denture and surgical template according to infection control guidelines

Performance Evidence
The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:
• followed 1 set of sequenced written instructions and the manufacturers’ instructions for preparing materials used in immediate dentures
• used standard precautions and safe work practices to construct an immediate denture from at least one denture suitable for insertion in the mouth including 1 of each of the following:
- maxillary or mandibular anterior tooth with at least one of the following:
o flanged denture with bone re-contouring
o flanged denture without bone re-contouring
o open-faced denture
- maxillary or mandibular posterior tooth with at least one of the following:
o flanged denture with bone re-contouring
o flanged denture without bone re-contouring
o open-faced denture
• critically evaluated the 1 immediate denture produced to meet technical laboratory and patient requirements.
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:
• Australian/New Zealand Standards, workplace health and safety (WHS) policies, Dental Board of Australia guidelines on infection control, Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation and organisation policies relating to dental laboratory work
• advantages of immediate dentures for the patient including:
- accurate positioning of the artificial teeth
- control of post-extraction haemorrhage
- correct restoration of the vertical and horizontal relationships between maxilla and mandible
- maintenance of appearance
• fundamental oral anatomy, including:
- dentition – arrangement of the teeth, naming and coding of teeth
- structures of the oral cavity – hard and soft palate, lateral and posterior borders of the oral cavity, tongue and floor of the mouth
- teeth form and function
• clinical treatment procedures necessary to prepare the patient for immediate denture insertion, including:
- where there are posterior teeth and no existing partial denture
- where a partial denture is present
• disadvantages of immediate dentures for the patient including:
- the implications for the patient where appearance of anterior artificial teeth cannot be approved at try-in
- the implications of rapid bone resorption following extraction
• types of immediate replacement dentures and their advantages and disadvantages:
- flanged denture without bone re-contouring
- flanged denture with bone re-contouring
- open-faced denture.
Assessment Conditions
Skills must have been demonstrated in a dental laboratory workplace or in a simulated dental laboratory environment that reflects workplace laboratory conditions. The following conditions must be met for this unit:
• use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources including:
- access to work order
- Dental Board of Australia guidelines on infection control on which the candidate bases the planning process
- laboratory safety manuals and procedures in line with relevant Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation
- WHS policies on which the candidate bases the planning process.
Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
