Description
This qualification is designed to provide appropriate training for workers who screen for and assess the degree of any hearing impairment, and take appropriate action based on the test results. Such actions could include referral for further audiological or medical assessment, prescribing and dispensing hearing aids and/or other listening devices that can assist in hearing rehabilitation.
In addition, work may be undertaken with clients and their carers in hearing health education programs to maximise the participation of hearing impaired people in aspects of personal and community activities. Audiometrists at this level would prescribe and dispense hearing aid technology and assist with rehabilitation.
They may work within larger audiology services, or in general or specialist medical practices, or operate as independent practitioners.

Entry Requirements
To gain entry into HLT51307 Diploma of Hearing Device Precription and Evaluation a candidate must demonstrate competence through a recognised training program or recognition process, in the following units of competency (or their equivalent) from HLT41307 Certificate IV in Audiometric Assessment:

The importance of culturally aware and respectful practice
All workers undertaking work in health need foundation knowledge to inform their work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and co-workers and with clients and co-workers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. This foundation must be provided and assessed as part of a holistic approach to delivery and assessment of this qualification. Specific guidelines for assessment of this aspect of competency are provided in the Assessment Guidelines for the Health Training Package.
