Replaces equivalent unit FPIWPP3231B Produce veneers from prepared flitches, which was first released with FPI05 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2.

This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to operate a vertical or horizontal slicing machine to produce leaves of timber veneers from prepared flitches. The unit includes operator maintenance.

The unit applies to production officers and technicians who produce veneers from prepared flitches in a forest and wood products factory setting.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states and territories at the time of publication, and may differ according to jurisdiction.

Pre-requisite Unit

Nil

Unit Sector

Wood Panel Products.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare to slice veneers.

1.1 Review work order and check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Identify and follow safe work procedure for producing veneers from prepared flitches.

1.3 Identify hazards and control risk in the work area.

1.4 Acquire type and quantity of timber species to be sliced from storage location.

1.5 Select equipment and conduct pre-start check in line with manufacturer's recommendations and site requirements.

1.6 Plan veneer slicing process and thickness in line with site procedures.

1.7 Establish and maintain communication with relevant personnel as required, to ensure safety and production requirements are met.

2. Load flitches, slice veneers and dispose of waste.

2.1 Check size and condition of prepared flitches and load acceptable flitches into slicer.

2.2 Position flitches to maximise available veneer and remove waste product.

2.3 Set and operate veneer slicing process to optimise veneer recovery in line with site procedures.

2.4 Constantly adjust machine speed and control of veneer cut to suit flitch characteristics in line with site procedures.

2.5 Dispose of defective material and rejected flitch and backing-board in line with site procedures and environmental requirements.

3. Maintain equipment, clean up and follow record keeping procedure.

3.1 Lock out equipment according to standard operating procedure.

3.2 Check cutting blades for blunt or damaged condition in line with manufacturer’s recommendations and site procedures, and remove and replace as required.

3.3 Clear dust, off-cuts and debris from machine area and dispose of in line with in line with safe work procedure and environmental requirements.

3.4 Record and report processing and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

  • monitor and adjust machine speed to suit production requirements
  • calculate slicing rates according to flitch characteristics and required veneer thickness
  • use numerical data to interpret work order and set equipment parameters.

Reading skills to:

  • monitor control panels.

Writing skills to:

  • record production, quality and faults information.

Problem solving skills to:

  • identify and resolve routine problems during the production process, to maintain production flow.

Replaces equivalent unit FPIWPP3231B Produce veneers from prepared flitches, which was first released with FPI05 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • slice timber veneers from prepared flitches in line with work order and safe work procedure, using a slicing machine
  • identify hazards and control risk to self, others and plant throughout the veneer production process
  • visually inspect prepared flitches to determine suitability for loading into slicer
  • identify defective materials throughout the production process and dispose of appropriately
  • perform lock-out, blade inspection, replacement and cleaning procedure on slicer
  • record and report production, quality and fault information using workplace record keeping procedure and systems.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • site standards, industry standards, workplace requirements, policies and safe work procedures relevant to producing veneers from prepared flitches
  • emergency response procedures (fire, accident and serious equipment malfunction) relevant to own role and responsibility
  • environmental protection requirements, including guidelines for waste minimisation, recycling, re-use and the safe disposal of waste material created by production and cleaning
  • hazards and risks associated with production of veneers from prepared flitches and appropriate risk controls as referred to the in the range of conditions
  • veneer types: quarter sawn, back sawn, radial (or rotary) sawn
  • characteristics of timber veneers: type, width, length, thickness
  • characteristics of flitch and timber defects: warp, wane, cupping, shakes, insect defects, knots, resin pockets
  • slicing processes using vertical or horizontal slicing equipment
  • established communication channels and protocols for communicating with relevant personnel as part of the production process
  • problem identification and resolution strategies and common fault finding techniques
  • procedures for the safe operation of slicing machine and visual inspection, removal and replacement of cutting blades
  • procedures for the lock-out and cleaning of equipment
  • procedures for recording and reporting production, quality, maintenance and faults information (manual or computer-based).

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • work order
  • safe work procedure for producing veneer from prepared flitches
  • personal protective equipment required to produce veneer from prepared flitches
  • first aid equipment
  • vertical or horizontal slicing machine
  • prepared flitches
  • relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information
  • manual or computer-based information recording systems for recording production, quality and fault information.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
  • be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
