This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to operate laminate and veneer bonding machinist to apply laminate and veneer to board surfaces.

The unit applies to production operators and technicians who laminate and veneer board surfaces in a forest and wood products factory setting and includes shutting down and cleaning equipment.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for application

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Obtain type and quantity of boards and laminate or veneer to be adhered from the production process.

1.4 Select production process in line with work order.

2. Apply laminate or veneer

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness.

2.3 Load and feed veneer or laminate and board in correct sequence to suit planned assembly.

2.4 Adjust spreader stations to deliver material in line with required board cross-section distribution.

2.5 Adjust glue feed, spread and tack level regularly, apply glue to board evenly and ensure board remains free of foreign material.

2.6 Check heat rolling process regularly to prevent creases, bubbles and other surface defects.

2.7 Monitor laminate or veneer routinely for position, adhesion, contamination, finish and trim tolerances.

2.8 Transfer finished panels for further processing in line with organisational procedures.

2.9 Dispose of sub-standard material in line with environmental protection practices.

3. Shut down and clean equipment

3.1 Coordinate shutdown with other line operators according to organisational safety procedures.

3.2 Strip, clean and replace gluing equipment, rollers, cauls, screens and handling equipment.

3.3 Check cutters or blades for bluntness or damage; remove and replace in line with manufacturer's recommendations.

3.4 Keep machine clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.5 Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.

Foundation Skills

Numeracy skills to:

  • identify quantities of required material within work orders and count numbers of boards and other materials
  • read basic numerical machine settings to set temperatures and glue feed rate.

Oral communication skills to:

  • workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures

  • safety data sheets for glue

Replaces equivalent unit FPIWPP3206B Laminate and veneer board surfaces, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • laminate boards in line with individual work orders prescribing different laminating thicknesses and quantities of boards; types of board must include one or more of the following:
  • medium density fibreboard
  • chipboard
  • fibreboard
  • plywood
  • across those jobs, apply the following types of laminating material:
  • laminate
  • veneer
  • after each of the above jobs, strip and clean the laminate and veneer bonding machine.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:
  • reducing water and energy use
  • cleaning plant, tools and equipment
  • disposing of, recycling and reusing boards
  • disposing of hazardous substances
  • typical flow of material supply in and out of the board laminating area
  • properties, at a basic level of understanding, of laminating materials and their uses for different types of boards:
  • laminate
  • veneer
  • characteristics of board types and the effects of lamination:
  • medium density fibreboard
  • chipboard
  • fibreboard
  • plywood
  • typical work flow processes techniques used to laminate and veneer boards:
  • applying laminating material and veneer
  • spreading glue
  • heat rolling material to boards
  • purpose, features and operation of equipment used to laminate and veneer board surfaces:
  • laminate and veneer bonding machines
  • glue spreading stations
  • heat rollers
  • methods used to strip and clean laminate and veneer bonding machines
  • organisational procedures specific to laminating and veneering board surfaces:
  • workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances
  • communication reporting lines
  • recording and reporting production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements 

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
  • be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
