Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for reconditioning

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.

1.3 Plan reconditioning process in line with work order.

2. Fit and grind wheel profile

2.1 Follow organisational safety procedures throughout all maintenance and repair processes.

2.2 Inspect and measure wheel to identify wear and grinding method.

2.3 Service, fit and align wheel grinder to wheel and band mill in line with manufacturer's instructions and recommended tolerances.

2.4 Make trial cut to check and further align grinder.

2.5 Grind wheel to remove all wear, ensuring face is not hollow.

2.6 Control grinding feeds to obtain required wheel profile and finish.

2.7 Measure wheel to ensure diameter of back and front edges are equivalent.

2.8 Measure wheel profile to ensure grinding has achieved required profile.

3. Reassemble band mill wheel

3.1 Remove grinder and base plate from band mill when grinding is complete.

3.2 Reassemble band mill components to manufacturer's instructions.

3.3 Set up band saw on mill to specified alignment.

3.4 Test band saw and mill to ensure correct operation.

3.5 Remove isolation padlocks or tags at completion of work in line with safety procedures.

3.6 Dispose of unserviceable wheels in line with organisational procedures and environmental protection practices.

3.7 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

  • accurately take wheel measurements
  • estimate the speed of band mill wheel rotation with the speed and depth of cut
  • complete precise calculations to achieve:
  • wheel alignment
  • alignment of saw guides to wheel faces
  • wheel thickness to manufacturer's specifications

Oral communication skills to:

  • ask questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders.

Reading skills to:

  • interpret:
  • workplace health and safety procedures
  • work orders
  • manufacturers’ instructions and maintenance recommendations.

Writing skills to:

  • complete basic accurate records of processing and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

  • efficiently and logically sequence stages of preparation and repair work using work order to guide activities.

Problem-solving skills to:

  • assess wheel condition and rectify faults through correct grinding processes
  • identify and dispose of unserviceable wheels
  • recognise faulty equipment and resolve by reporting or rectifying.

Technology skills to:

  • select and use appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment for reconditioning band mill wheels
  • efficiently and safely recondition band mill wheels.

Replaces equivalent unit FPISAW3222B Recondition band mill wheels, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency.  These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to reconditioning band mill wheels
  • recondition band mill wheels in line with the work order and within prescribed organisational requirements
  • remove and replace wheels from band mill if faces are to be resurfaced on a metal lathe
  • assess band mill wheel conditions in line with standard operating procedures.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • purpose, features and operation of a band and wide band saw mill wheels
  • features and names of different parts of band mills
  • purpose, features and operation of tools and equipment used to recondition band mill wheels:
  • grinding equipment
  • measuring equipment
  • importance of aligning band mill wheels to the specified profile for continued accuracy during band saw operation
  • methods for:
  • removing wheels from band mills
  • assessing condition of wheels
  • grinding the faces of the band mill wheels to specified requirements
  • re-assembling band mill components
  • setting up band saw on mill to specific alignment
  • testing operational effectiveness of band saws and mills
  • wheel profiles and appropriate tolerances
  • range of speeds at which abrasive grinders can be operated without damaging band mill wheels
  • organisational policies and procedures specific to reconditioning band mill wheels:
  • workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment
  • communication reporting lines
  • recording and reporting processing and equipment faults.
  • environmental protection practices for repairing and maintaining tools and equipment in forest products factory settings:
  • reducing water and energy use
  • cleaning plant, tools and equipment
  • disposing of, recycling and reusing materials.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • tools and equipment used to recondition band mill wheels:
