Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to plan for and navigate the extraction or breakout of logs to the landing in a forest or forest farm setting. It requires the ability to direct choker setters, transmit signals to the yarder operator and assist with line shifts for cable logging operations.

The unit applies to job roles for monitoring log recovery including Rigging Slinger.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for rigging slinger operations

1.1 Review work plan and check where required with appropriate personnel

1.2 Identify type and quantity of logs to be extracted and assess for safety and environmental protection practices

1.3 Select appropriate equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations

1.4 Plan cable operation activities in line with work order

2. Plan breakout

2.1 Plan and complete breakout operations in line with environmental conditions and workplace health and safety (WHS) procedures

2.2 Identify audible or visual signal system to be used

2.3 Assess site, rigged cable system and landing for slope, haul line, backline, lift capacity and landing chute

2.4 Identify obstacles to extraction operations and develop avoidance plan

2.5 Identify logs to be recovered with current and future haul lines

2.6 Assess information to plan extraction pattern for typical number and size of logs to be hauled

2.7 Plan line shifts during hauling; establish and prepare future rigging points and rigging

3. Direct hook up of logs

3.1 Select specific logs for next turn prior to return of rigging in line with planned operation

3.2 Assess stability of logs to be extracted and take precautions against movement in line with code of practice

3.3 Direct choker setters to prepare and hook up logs ready for extraction

3.4 Give haul signals, in line with code of practice, when all persons are clear from logs, bight of ropes and in a safe area

3.5 Monitor log movement and stop for corrective action when difficulties occur

3.6 Maintain control of movement using signalling systems until payload is in clear sight of yarder operator

3.7 Record and report breakout process and equipment faults in line with site procedures

4. Assist with line shifts

4.1. Clear all logs to be hauled with existing line position before line shift is initiated

4.2. Notch stumps in line with code requirements for the rigging method to be used

4.3. Pull slack on all lines prior to release of existing rigging

4.4. Dismantle rigging components from the existing line, check and set up on new line

4.5. Move obstructions which may cause binding or damage during hauling

4.6. Rig spars, tail trees and intermediate supports in line with site procedures

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential for performance in this unit of competency but are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that, on at least one occasion, the individual has:

  • safely and efficiently monitored log recovery

In doing the above job, the individual has:

  • performed rigging slinger operations to recover felled logs in line with a work order and within prescribed organisational tolerances
  • planed the breakout process in line with site conditions
  • monitored log recovery using one or more of the following cable systems:
  • high lead (no skyline)
  • standing skyline
  • running skyline
  • assisted in shifting lines in line with the hook tender's instructions.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • content and application of applicable state or territory code of practice relevant to log recovery activities
  • key features of varying site conditions and effects on log recovery, including:
  • fallen trees
  • general forest lean
  • ground growth
  • ground hazards and obstacles
  • ground slope
  • density of trees
  • wet and adverse weather conditions
  • wind speed and direction
  • environmental protection practices for forest and forest farm settings, including:
  • safe disposal of waste material
  • cleaning of plant, tools and equipment
  • characteristics of trees
  • industry standard lengths for logs
  • techniques used by rigging slingers in the log recovery process, including:
  • log extraction methods
  • cable logging techniques
