Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to manage coppice stem development in the regeneration of broadleaf forests by allowing coppice stems to grow from ground level stumps (stools). The unit includes thinning to promote growth of stronger stems and to achieve a higher yield rate.

The unit applies to Forestry technician, Nursery technician, Supervisor (Forestry operations), Tree planter, Silviculturist, Arboriculture technician.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for coppice management

1.1 Review and clarify work order with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Identify and assess type and quantity of stumps to grow coppice and plan coppice activities.

1.3 Select thinning equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

2. Develop coppice stems

2.1 Establish and maintain communication with others to ensure a safe work environment.

2.2 Assess environmental conditions and respond to them when planning the coppice development of each tree stump.

2.3 Direct chainsaw operators to cut tree stumps at ground level to form stools.

2.4 Clear stools of debris and allow to rest and sprout coppice.

2.5 Protect coupe from wildlife and grazing animals during coppice development.

2.6 Remove or leave standard seedlings in line with the coppice management plan

2.7 Assess stools regularly to measure and gauge the amount of coppice growth.

3. Undertake thinning

3.1 Assess coppice stems to identify stronger stems and determine how many stems to leave.

3.2 Remove weaker or smaller coppice stems by hand or mechanically.

3.3 Undertake thinning regularly to control regrowth and promote the growth of retained coppice stems.

3.4 Direct and prepare harvesting activities to thin more mature coppice forests.

3.5 Recycle debris in line with site procedures and environmental requirements.

3.6 Record and report coppice management activities to the appropriate personnel.

Foundation Skills

Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • manage coppice stems to promote forest regeneration and bring about high volume yields
  • conduct thinning operations of coppice stems using thinning tools, equipment and machinery
  • follow organisational policies and procedures for managing coppice stems
  • identify and recommend methods manage stem quality and growth
  • communicate coppice stem management requirements effectively
  • report results from coppice management activities to appropriate personnel.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • applicable regulations, standards, codes of practice and established safe practices for managing coppice stems
  • environmental protection requirements, including the safe disposal of waste
  • environmental risks and hazards associated with working in a forest and managing coppice growth
  • characteristics of trees and timber defects
  • coppice stem development and regeneration methods
  • tools, equipment and machinery used for managing coppice stems, and their safe use and maintenance
  • established communication channels and protocols to maintain safety and effective work flow
  • procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • site with stumps and coppice growth to be managed
  • tools, equipment and machinery used for managing coppice stems
  • suitable PPE for managing coppice stems
  • relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information
  • workplace requirements and site standards for managing coppice stems.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
  • be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
