Replaces equivalent unit FPIFGM3203B Conduct an instrument survey, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 1.

This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to plan, monitor and implement an instrument survey for a range of survey purposes. The unit includes evaluation of the survey and reporting of outcomes.

The unit applies to those who conduct instrument surveys in a forest environment.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states and territories at the time of publication, and may differ according to jurisdiction.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan instrument survey

1.1 Identify and follow WHS, environmental, legal and organisational requirements relevant to conducting an instrument survey.

1.2 Adhere to site environmental protection measures in line with relevant requirements.

1.3 Check work order, identify survey purpose and check specifications with appropriate personnel.

1.4 Relevant information is obtained, interpreted and analysed for impact on current survey.

1.5 Coordinate and schedule survey tools, equipment and personnel requirements.

1.6 Identify and organise permit or licence requirements.

1.7 Select survey method/s and instruments and communicate survey schedule to appropriate personnel.

2. Implement and monitor instrument survey

2.1 Establish and maintain regular communication with others in line with WHS requirements and to ensure continuous workflow and progress.

2.2 Carry out instrument survey in line with work order and specifications in survey plan, consulting individuals and groups as required.

2.3 Monitor and modify survey plan as required in response to equipment, personnel, site condition changes and environmental requirements.

2.4 Conduct routine checks to ensure survey documentation and data are accurately and continuously recorded and completed.

2.5 Routinely review survey progress to maintain efficient options, and hazards or impediments to the survey are promptly rectified.

3. Review instrument survey

3.1 Compile and organise survey documentation and data for review.

3.2 Prepare map or plan in line with survey requirements.

3.3 Prepare survey report in appropriate format in line with organisational guidelines.

3.4 Undertake evaluation of survey plan and processes and documented for use in reviewing and revising future instrument surveys.

3.5 Record and report instrument survey outcomes in line with site procedures and organisational requirements.

  • read maps and interpret survey data
  • prepare plans and diagrams representative of instrument survey.

  • identify equipment faults or impediments to survey work and rectify.

Replaces equivalent unit FPIFGM3203B Conduct an instrument survey, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency.  These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to conducting an instrument survey
  • communicating and following safe work practices
  • plan and coordinate instrument survey processes and implementing an instrument plan
  • monitor the collection of survey documentation and data
  • prepare a survey report to include data analysis and consider costs, difficulties or issues faced and recommendations for future work.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • workplace requirements and site standards requirements, policies and procedures for conducting an instrument survey
  • environmental risks and hazards of survey work
  • environmental protection requirements of work sites
  • survey techniques and purposes including laying out road lines, marking establishment boundaries and forest area boundaries, assessment of forest, laying out planting rows, site design or drainage design
  • safety issues and hazards associated with undertaking boundary surveys
  • methods of navigating and geographically orienting in the field
  • established communication channels and protocols
  • problem identification and resolution strategies, and common fault finding techniques
  • types of tools and equipment used for instrument surveys, and procedures for their safe use and maintenance
  • procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • survey instruments and equipment
  • site to be surveyed
  • survey tools including tape, hammer, pegs and pins, chain, measuring wheel, global positioning system (GPS)
  • personal protective equipment for conducting an instrument survey
  • work order, workplace requirements and site standards for conducting an instrument survey.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements 

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
  • be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
