Replaces equivalent unit FPICOT4204B Schedule and coordinate load shifting, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2.

This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to schedule and coordinate load shifting activities for a range of material handling requirements.

The unit applies to workers who monitor and coordinate load shifting activities for safe and efficient operations in a forest products factory setting.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states and territories at the time of publication, and may differ according to jurisdiction.

ELEMENTS 

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

1. Schedule load shifting

1.1 Review production and despatch schedules and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Assess equipment operations for all sections of the organisation.

1.3 Determine material handling requirements for loads and schedule required type of equipment to meet requirements.

1.4 Identify movement frequencies and develop material handling schedules.

1.5 Identify and assess variations in material handling requirements and product despatch requirements.

1.6 Adjust material handling schedules to maintain optimal output.

2. Coordinate load shifting

2.1 Coordinate load shifting arrangements for operators to ensure safe and efficient use of equipment.

2.2 Assess operating areas for unsafe conditions, acts and congestion to maintain safety.

2.3 Organise load movement to limit multiple loads being moved at the same time in the same area.

2.4 Resolve difficult load shifting situations and incidents in line with organisational safety procedures.

2.5 Record and report load shifting processes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Foundation Skills

  • interpret details of weights and dimensions of loads from production and despatch schedules and calculate load shifting capacity of equipment.

  • develop and document load shifting schedules in a style and format easily understood by operators

  • source, collect and organise data to inform load shifting schedules
  • efficiently and logically manage operational logistics for load shifting activities.

Replaces equivalent unit FPICOT4204B Schedule and coordinate load shifting, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency.  These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • schedule and coordinate load shifting activities in line with production and despatch schedules prescribing quantities and types of material to be shifted.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • applicable fall from heights regulations and compliance requirements
  • methods used to schedule load shifting according to staff rosters and availability of equipment
  • typical workplace hazards present during load shifting operations and methods of minimising risks
  • purpose, features and operation equipment used to shift loads in forest products factories
  • use of specific equipment to move materials found in forest product factories:
  • treated paper
  • wood chips
  • flakes
  • wood fibre
  • logs
  • bark
  • off-cuts
  • timber
  • raw board
  • panel products
  • veneer
  • capacity of load shifting equipment in relation to dimensions and weight
  • organisational procedures specific to load shifting:
  • workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment
  • communication reporting lines
  • recording and reporting load shifting processes and equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • load shifting equipment including one or more of the following:

fork lifts

  • loaders
  • skid steer loaders
  • dozers
  • cranes
  • truck-mounted loading cranes
  • gantry cranes
  • a commercial quantity of material to be shifted including one or more of the following:
  • treated paper
  • wood chips
  • flakes
  • wood fibre
  • logs
  • bark
  • off-cuts
  • timber
  • raw board
  • panel products
  • veneer
  • production and despatch schedules with specific information about requirements for quantities and types of material to be shifted within the forest products factory
  • template documents for recording load shifting processes and equipment faults
  • organisational procedures for load shifting
  • personal protective equipment required for scheduling and coordinating load shifting for different materials.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Load shifting operations must be present in order that the individual can monitor activities and resolve issues as they arise.

Assessor requirements 

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
  • be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
