This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to monitor and review forestry operations on a site with a view to recommend improvements develop new and flexible approaches.
The unit applies to job roles that incorporate monitoring and reviewing forestry operations in a forest environment.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Monitor forestry operations
|
1.1 Establish and maintain communication with others in line with forestry operations requirements.
1.2 Monitor tasks in a safe manner in line with legislative requirements and environmental management systems, organisational policies and procedures.
1.3 Monitor organisation of duties, practices, equipment and materials in line with WHS requirements and organisational procedures.

2. Review improvement opportunities
|
2.1 Review operational plans and site practices for potential improvement, modifications and time savings.
2.2 Monitor and record community and organisational environmental goals.
2.3 Monitor training and operational controls to ensure they are in line with workplace procedures.
2.4 Record and report recommendations for improvement for resourcing requirements.
2.5 Plans to introduce change in consultation with appropriate personnel.

3. Develop new and flexible approaches
|
3.1 Develop and trial new systems and technologies on site following WHS requirements and in line with site requirements.
3.2 Check new systems for effective improvements or time savings, modify and communicate to appropriate personnel for implementation.
3.3 Monitor and care for the environment through integration into all day-to-day activities.
3.4 Conduct progress reviews to assess impact of improvement and on the environment.
3.5 Record and report forestry operation procedures in line with workplace procedures.

Replaces equivalent unit FPICOR4202B Monitor and review forestry operations, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.
Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including ‘Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement.

Performance Evidence
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:
- follow applicable Commonwealth, State or Territory legislative and regulatory requirements and codes of practice relevant to monitoring and reviewing forestry operations
- follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to monitoring and reviewing forestry operations
- monitor and review operational policies and procedures within the organisation
- develop new and flexible approaches for conducting forestry operations
- measure improvement outcomes.
Knowledge Evidence
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- applicable Commonwealth, State or Territory legislation, regulations, standards, codes of practice and established safe practices relevant to the full range of processes for monitoring and reviewing forestry operations
- environmental protection and care requirements including:
- environmental sustainability
- protection of water courses and water quality
- soil and salinity management
- reduction and disposal of waste
- energy efficiency
- biodiversity and habitat protection
- conservation of natural resources
- fire management
- organisational and site standards, requirements, policies and procedures relevant to monitoring and reviewing forestry operations
- sustainable procurement practices, including selecting products and services on the basis of how they minimise and monitor their impact on the environment
- types of equipment used in forestry operations, their procedures for use, operation and maintenance
- forestry operations, techniques and technology, including:
- improvement of timber technology methodologies
- on-site forestry operations
- ancillary forest operations
- environmental risks and hazard identification
- environmental management systems, including:
- compliance, improvement and prevention
- continuous cycle of plan, implement, monitor, review and improve environmental practices and systems
- established communication channels and protocols
- procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.
Assessment Conditions
The following resources must be made available:
- access to a forestry operation
- applicable Commonwealth, State or Territory legislative and regulatory requirements and codes of practice relevant to monitoring and reviewing forestry operations.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
- hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
- be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
- be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
