Application

This unit describes the skills required to arm/de-arm explosive ordnance systems during operations and in training situations. Arming explosive ordnance systems means placing the weapon system in a readiness state whereby it can then be fired without further preparation. Arming and de-arming explosive ordnance systems occurs on the land, on or below the sea and in the air. This unit can apply above and below the high water mark.

This unit applies to those who are required to arm/de-arm explosive ordnance systems during operations and in training situations.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.

Those undertaking this unit would work independently as part of a team and under indirect supervision. They would use discretion and judgement and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs while performing routine tasks in a broad range of contexts.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

  • applying explosive ordnance return/disposal procedures
  • applying regulations and instructions
  • operating specialised vehicles/equipment
  • performing weapon systems safety checks
  • reading, accessing, interpreting and applying technical instructions
  • applying manual handling and team lifting techniques
  • using PPE
  • handling dangerous good and hazardous substances safely.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:

  • Operational knowledge of
  • composition, safety distances, restrictions and duties within an explosive area
  • explosive ordnance documentation
  • explosive ordnance handling and transportation procedures
  • identification and purpose of markings for explosive ordnance and explosive ordnance packaging
  • malfunctioned ordnance clearance and emergency procedures
  • United Nations classification and segregation requirements of explosive ordnance and ammunition types
  • weapons system safety checks
  • weapon system malfunctions and consequences
  • weapon systems safety precautions, characteristics and description.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations. Where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that reflect workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

  • a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations
  • acceptable means of simulation assessment
  • applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals
  • relevant materials, tools, equipment and PPE currently used in industry.
