1. Prepare for firing 

1.1 Requirements for firing of explosive ordnance  are identified and clarified

1.2 Work health and safety (WHS) requirements including those specific to the nature of the ordnance are identified and applied throughout the operation

1.3 Firing methods are confirmed in accordance with policy and procedures

1.4 Liaison with and notification of parties affected by the firing is undertaken in accordance with Range Standing Orders and local requirements

1.5 Site/equipment preparation is completed in accordance with organisation  policy and procedures, and Range Standing Orders

1.6 Net explosive quantities  are identified, calculated and monitored throughout the operation

1.7 Compatibility  is identified, analysed and applied throughout the operation

1.8 Test equipment  is set up in accordance with instructions

2. Fire explosive ordnance 

2.1 Explosive ordnance and firing mechanisms are prepared and tested in accordance with Range Standing Orders and organisation policy

2.2 Explosive ordnance is fired in accordance with Range Standing Orders and organisation policy

2.3 Residue is inspected to ensure all explosives have been fired in accordance with Range Standing Orders

2.4 Measurements  are taken and recorded in accordance with instructions

3. Finalise the firing process 

3.1 Recorded measurements are assessed against standards and results are documented in accordance with organisation policy and procedures

3.2 Site/equipment is maintained and/or refurbished in accordance with policy and procedures, and Range Standing Orders

3.3 Documentation and records are maintained in accordance with policy and Range Standing Orders

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit 

Assessment must confirm the ability to:

• adhere to relevant WHS requirements and operational safety
• identify firing requirements and constraints
• accurately record results in accordance with firing instructions
• compile documentation.

Competency should be demonstrated in a range of actual or simulated explosive ordnance contexts.

Context of and specific resources for assessment 

Context of assessment 

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or under conditions, which accurately simulate a realistic workplace. The competency should be assessed in a wide range of activities related to the storage, distribution and maintenance of explosive ordnance and other hazardous materials.

Specific resources for assessment 

Access is required to:

• facilities and resources used in the assessing of explosive ordnance, including a licensed explosive site or range

Method of assessment 

This unit may be assessed with the following unit:

• DEFEO101D Work safely with explosive ordnance

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

• direct observation
• interviewing the candidate
• journals and workplace documentation
• third party reports from supervisors
• written or oral questions

The Range Statement relates to the Unit of Competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised  wording in the Performance Criteria is detailed below.
