Unit Descriptor

This unit covers the competency required to operate a radar in order to locate targets and to provide information as directed by the operational plan. Operation of the radar may include; classification, identification, location and navigation.

The operator will work as part of a team and will be under supervision.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.

Application of the Unit

This competency was developed for combat arms personnel required to operate a radar in order to locate targets and to provide information as directed by the operational plan in a deployed operational environment but is applicable to any individual in this field of work.

Typically, operators work as part of a team under direct or indirect supervision, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs. All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures.

1. Set up radar 

1.1 Radar is prepared for operation in accordance with standard procedures. 

1.2 Radar is initialised and used in accordance with standard procedures and manufacturer's instructions.

1.3 Operational performance and accuracy of the radar is confirmed and appropriate action  is taken where performance is out of limits.

1.4 Misrepresentations and false echoes are detected and discounted.

2. Operate radar 

2.1 Radar is operated in accordance with standard procedures to produce required data.

2.2 Data produced by the radar is interpreted and used to assist command decisions, taking into account known limitations and errors  associated with the equipment.

2.3 Faults or difficulties within the operator’s ability to correct are corrected.

2.4 Any faults or difficulties beyond the operator’s ability to correct are referred to supervisor and action is taken as directed.

2.5 Data is provided to supervisor or user.

2.6 Administration is completed in accordance with standard procedures.

2.7 Operational maintenance  is conducted as required.

Context of assessment 

Competency should be assessed in an operational or simulated operational environment. The simulation should replicate the live environment where stress and fatigue are key features.

Specific resources for assessment 

Access to appropriate radar equipment and an appropriate field site or a high fidelity simulator.
