Application
This unit describes the skills required to assess the need to use and apply defensive techniques, contain incidents and evaluate responses. This unit applies to those working in a custodial correctional services context. The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to incident response. Those undertaking this unit work with support from a coordinated team with regular support. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication. |

Assess the level and nature of risk based on incident risk factors and identified opportunities. |

Assess incidents to determine the need for defensive techniques against the organisation’s use of force guidelines, legal requirements and emergency response procedures. |

Assess the capacity to complete the defensive action and consider viability of using alternative actions. |

Apply defensive techniques |

Call for assistance and support using authorised alarms and codes. |

Apply defensive techniques ensuring protection and safety of people involved. |

Monitor the degree of response against identified opportunities and incident factors. |

Carry defensive equipment in a secure, protected and accessible position for safe deployment. |

Present and deploy defensive equipment using recognised techniques. |

Adjust or discontinue response according to changes in circumstances and degree of risk. |

Provide accounts of incidents as part of the review and debriefing process. |
