Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently demonstrated mechanical cutting on a minimum of three occasions.

Individuals must demonstrate they can:

  • identify and apply mechanical cutting information and job specifications
  • prepare cutting list and plan cutting processes
  • set up and use mechanical cutting equipment according to workplace procedures, work health and safety (WHS) requirements, and working drawings
  • inspect and cut material according to job specifications, operating equipment according to manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
  • identify, tag and report faulty cutting equipment
  • complete cutting list.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes:

  • WHS requirements, personal protective equipment (PPE) and workplace procedures relating to operating mechanical cutting equipment
  • types, applications and operation of mechanical cutting equipment
  • procedures for setting up and operating mechanical cutting equipment
  • material-handling techniques relating to performing mechanical cutting
  • methods for preparing cutting lists.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must satisfy SNR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the mechanical cutting operations that they have performed, e.g. production work sheets.

Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.

The following resources must be made available:

  • workplace or simulated workplace
  • WHS equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) required for mechanical cutting operations
  • mechanical cutting equipment
  • material for cutting
  • marking and measuring equipment relevant to performing mechanical cutting
  • working drawings and cutting specifications
  • work sheets relating to performing mechanical cutting operations.
