Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions section

1. Plan and prepare

1.1 Work order, job instructions and quality requirements are located and confirmed with appropriate personnel

1.2 Tools and equipment required for the job are identified, selected and checked for faults and correct operation

1.3 Materials required to complete the job are identified and prepared

1.4 Repair plan is prepared and confirmed with appropriate personnel

2. Assess fault

2.1 Vehicle components are inspected for fault against job specifications and workplace quality standards

2.2 Fault or defects are assessed and cause identified

3. Repair fault

3.1 Repair activities are carried out according to workplace procedures

3.2 Appropriate tools are used to repair fault or defects

3.3 Faulty or defective areas are repaired to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications and workplace quality standards

3.4 Repaired components are inspected for compliance against OEM specifications and returned to the production sequence

4. Complete work processes

4.1 Work area is cleaned, and materials disposed of, reused or recycled according to workplace procedures and cost-reduction initiatives

4.2 Tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored according to workplace procedures

4.3 Faulty tools and equipment are identified, tagged and reported

4.4 Repair work sheet is completed according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently repaired faults in vehicle metal components on a minimum of three occasions.

Individuals must demonstrate they can:

  • observe workplace procedures relating to repairing vehicle metal component faults
  • comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements relating to repairing faults in vehicle metal components
  • select suitable repair methods and techniques
  • select and conduct component inspections
  • follow workplace quality guidelines when repairing vehicle metal components
  • repair and rectify vehicle metal components
  • select and use repair tools and equipment correctly
  • comply with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications when repairing vehicle metal components
  • complete work sheets and documentation detailing repair of vehicle metal component faults.

Knowledge Evidence

Individuals must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • WHS requirements and workplace procedures relating to repairing vehicle metal component faults
  • types of inspection procedures of vehicle metal components and their application
  • types of metal damage and defects
  • operation of specialist metal repair tools and equipment
  • metal component repair techniques
  • workplace quality documentation relating to repairing vehicle metal component faults.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must satisfy SNR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the vehicles that they have worked on, e.g. repair orders.

Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.

The following resources must be made available:

  • automotive manufacturing workplace or simulated workplace
  • workplace instructions and procedures relevant to repairing faults in vehicle metal components
  • WHS equipment appropriate to the work being performed
  • metal repair tools and equipment required for inspecting and rectifying faults in vehicle metal components
  • vehicles or vehicle panels and components with defects that require repair.
