The primary outcome of the course is educational, providing a pathway to University undergraduate courses or further tertiary education studies at Diploma / Advanced Diploma levels. It is specifically designed to develop appropriate skills, knowledge and attitudes sufficient for adult learners to access tertiary education and to prepare learners for the rigours of tertiary level study. Amongst other skills, the course is intended to provide participants with the following general education outcomes:

• Life-long learning skills
• Higher order literacy and numeracy skills
• Analytical thinking and problem solving skills
• Skills to use information communication technology
• Foundation knowledge and skills in a variety of specific fields of study which will vary according to the electives chosen

It is primarily intended for learners who, for a variety of reasons, wish to qualify, or improve their qualifications for tertiary entrance.

This course:
• does not duplicate, by title or coverage, the outcomes of an endorsed training package qualification
• is not a sub-set of a single training package qualification that could be recognised through one or more statements of attainment or a skill set
• does not include units of competency additional to those in a training package qualification that could be recognised through statements of attainment in addition to the qualification
• does not comprise modules or units that duplicate the units of competency of a training package qualification
